Bookworm

Prompt: Tell us about the last book you read (Why did you choose it? Would you recommend it?).

 photo n381515_zps1ff551c6.jpg

I just finished this book last night. It's the second installment of the Magical Cats Mystery series. I'm a big fan of cozy mysteries that involve cats, and this one has the added fun of the cats having magical powers. Hercules is able to walk through doors and walls, and Owen is able to disappear and re-appear at will. Those abilities come in handy when their librarian owner, Kathleen, is trying to solve the latest murder mystery in town.  This time around, it's a sweet old lady, a retired teacher who had always done whatever she could to help troubled kids. Along with trying to solve the murder, Kathleen is helping the rest of the town prepare for Winterfest and living in denial of her feelings for Detective Marcus Gordon.

I would most definitely recommend this to anyone who loves mysteries, cats, and/or fun, easy reads.

I Feel the Earth Move

I Feel the Earth Move

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

If you're not familiar with today's song, you can hear it here.

1) This song is from the album Tapestry, one of the all-time best-sellers (more than 25,000,000 copies sold worldwide). Is it in your collection?
Yes, but only in my Spotify collection online.
2) It's about that glorious passion you feel when you first fall for someone. How many times have you been in love?
True love only once....but there were a lot of times before that I THOUGHT I was in love.
3) San Francisco radio stations briefly removed "I Feel the Earth Move" from their playlists after the 1989 earthquake. Have you ever been in an earthquake and literally felt "the earth move under your feet?"
Nope, no earthquakes for me.
4) Carole King is the first and only woman to win the Gershwin Prize for songwriting from the Library of Congress. Here's your chance to brag a little -- tell us about an accolade you have received.
I've had a book of my poetry published, as well as a few individual poems published in magazines.

5) Carole wrote "You've Got a Friend," which was a mega hit for her good pal, James Taylor. King and Taylor have known one another for more than 40 years, but have never been romantically involved. Do you have any platonic friends of the opposite sex?
Yes...my best friends have almost always been male.
6) Like more than 80% of the population, Carole is right handed. Are you right handed, left handed (10%) or that most rare of all, ambidextrous (less than 10%)?
I am right handed.
7) One of Carole King's earliest hits was Little Eva's "The Loco-Motion." Little Eva was the teenager King hired to care for her young children. Tell us about a sitter who cared for you when you were little.
Most of the time, that would have been my grandparents.
8) Beautiful is the title of the Broadway play about Carole King's life. If we were producing your life story, what would you want us to call it?
My blog title, Snapshots of a Life, sounds good to me.
9) Carole wrote "Pleasant Valley Sunday," the Monkees' song about conspicuous consumption. When Crazy Sam looks at her crowded shelf of hair products (paraben-free conditioner, keratin-restoring conditioner, hair masque, hot oil conditioner …), she realizes she's guilty of it herself. Have you bought anything recently that you later decided was a waste of money?
In the past, but not recently....I'm much more conscious of what I buy and how much I spend these days.

Finish The Sentence Friday: No Compromise!

Finish the Sentence Friday

The one thing I'll never compromise on is...

I will never compromise on my faith, and the things I believe because of it. That is the main reason why I no longer feel comfortable participating in an organized religion. I can't sit in a church every week where I hear things that totally go against what I believe in my heart. I'll list some examples below....which may be controversial to some of you.

  • I can't listen to how "God has been taken out of the schools." God is omnipresent, which means He is EVERYWHERE. We are totally incapable of taken him out of any place, no matter how we may try. Anyone who wants to talk to him in a school can do so, as long as they do it silently.
  • I can't listen to how anyone who isn't a Christian is going to Hell. Jews, Muslims and Christians all believe in the same God, for starters. So wouldn't that suggest that He would welcome all of them into Heaven--and that He might present Himself in different ways to other people around the world?
  • I can't listen to how homosexuals are an abomination and doomed to eternal damnation. I believe that people are born that way--created by God--so why would He create them simply to doom them that way?
  • The one that really heats me up is hearing how American Christians are being persecuted.  American Christians who use that word don't have the slightest idea what real persecution is, for the most part. Being jailed or killed for your faith is persecution...having someone say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas"is not.
  • One more....freedom of religion applies to any and all religions, not just Christianity. So if you want the right to set up a manger scene at Christmas in the town square, or display the Ten Commandments in the courthouse, don't get repulsed when Jews want to display a menorah, or Satanists want a statue of Satan with little children.
So, that's my soapbox rant for the day....hope you enjoyed it!   :)

THIS WEEKS THEMES:
learning, making, loving, reading, smelling

I am currently learning that knowing secrets, especially really good, really important ones, can drive me crazy. I've known something since the weekend, and I really want to tell the world, but it's not time yet, so I have to continue to let it bubble up inside for a while longer.

I am currently making breakfast for myself--Lucky Charms and cappuccino.  Yep, I still eat "kid" cereals most of the time.  :)

I am currently loving the sunshine and warm weather.

I am currently reading three different books: Sleight of Paw, by Sofie Kelly,  Tempest In A Teapot,by Amanda Cooper, and I Am Having So Much Fun Here Without You, by Courtney Maum

I am currently smelling whatever flavor of coffee Barry has brewing this morning.

next weeks themes:
managing, missing, thinking, creating, looking

Share Your World--2014 Week 25

What is your favorite type of dog?  (can be anything from a specific breed, a stuffed animal, drawing, cartoon or character in a movie or TV show)
I would have to say my favorite type of dog is Boston Terrier. They have always made me smile....they're just so adorable!

Name one thing not many people know about you.
That I had serious fears of "going crazy" as a teen and young adult, because it was something my mother told me from the time I was 12---that I WAS crazy, and someday I would wind up locked up somewhere.

Have you ever gone scuba diving?  If you haven’t, would you want to?
Never been, and will never go, as I can't swim.

What was the most important event in your life last week? (anything goes it can be a good nights sleep, finished a reading book, winning the lottery, or getting married)
Finding out some very special news....which I can't share yet!!!

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?
Same thing for both, actually....just having some fairly "normal" days without having to deal with anything relating to our extended family.

Wednesday Hodgepodge, Volume 179

1. What summer activity most takes you back to your own childhood?
Cooking on the grill---and making s'mores after dinner.

2. What's your favorite summer smell?
New mown grass.

3. It's beach season in the US of A...so how do you feel about sand?
I LOVE the beach...but I'm not too fond of having to wash sand off everything and everyone.

4. Sun tea, SunChips, sunflower seeds, Capri Sun, Sunny Delight, Sun-Maid raisins, sun-dried tomatoes...your favorite food or beverage with sun in its name?
Definitely sun tea....sun SWEET tea!

5. What's your favorite way to cool off on a hot summer day?
A glass of sweet tea and a fan,or the air conditioner, depending on how hot it is.

6. Share a favorite song with the word sun or sunshine in it's title.

7. Tell us about a time you had an exceedingly good or truly awful customer service experience. If it was awful, did you report it? Ever go back there again?
My most recent exceedingly BAD customer service experience was on the telephone, with my cell provider. It spanned three days and several representatives, and I still wound up having to solve the problem myself.  No use reporting it, as they were simply reading the stock answer from the manual (and they were from India, where the culture involves rudeness).  I will continue to use the cell provider, but probably not their online pay option in the future.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.
I've found the bright side to all this spring/summer rain....it gives me more time to read.  :)

Tuesday Ten: Things I Would Tell My Sixteen Year Old Self

The Golden Spoons

Day 4 photo dear16yearoldme_zps47f4267f.jpg
1) Stop trying to live your life the way others want you to....plan the future YOU want.

2) Don't get too serious about any boy until after you finish college.

3) Keep writing no matter how discouraged you get about it---one day you'll be glad you did.

4) Those kids who make fun of you? In the future, you won't remember their faces or names.

5) One day you will actually have a friendly, more loving relationship with your mother.

6) No one is perfect...learn from your mistakes and move on.

7) Work on your relationship with your younger brother. He's the only sibling you have, after all.

8) Enjoy every minute you have with your dad...in a few years you're going to miss those moments.

9) Always take LOTS of pictures...you'll want to have those memories to look back on when you get older.

10) Most importantly, live every day to the fullest!!!

Mommy Reality Challenge #5--The Laundry Room

A Lavender Life

I read this challenge Friday just after I'd put my laundry in the washer, so I have two pictures this week, one during laundry and one after.

This Is Your Life

If you could read a book containing all that has happened and will ever happen in your life, would you? If you choose to read it, you must read it cover to cover.

Since it says that I would have to read it cover to cover, I would have to decline. I wouldn't mind reading back over what has already happened in my life, or at least the good parts of it. It would be nice to go back to my childhood and read about things that I may have forgotten about after so many years.

But to know everything that will happen in my future? That would be way too much for me to handle. I prefer living like a normal person, not knowing what tomorrow brings, or how many tomorrows I have, or how it will all end. It just seems too creepy otherwise.

Saturday 9: Little Red Corvette

Little Red Corvette

Saturday 9: LIttle Red Corvette
(recommended by Smellyann

No link this week. Prince apparently is very strict about copyright infringement.

1) The subject of this song is frankly sexual. Do you blush easily?
Not as easily as I used to, thank goodness.

2) Prince is his real name (Prince Rogers, to be exact). Growing up, his relatives called him "Skipper." Do you have any nicknames within your family?
My younger cousins used to call me Teesa since they couldn't pronounce my name.
3) Prince says he's "obsessed" with Mozart and reads whatever he can find about the composer. What's the last book you read?
Currently reading Sweet Evil,by Wendy Higgins.
4) Between Prince and The Beach Boys, the Corvette is a much sung-about car. Tell us about your vehicle.
Don't have one...haven't driven in about 15 yrs.

5) In the 1980s, when Prince was popular, MTV could turn a song into a hit. In 2014, how do you hear new music?
Spotify or the radio.

6) In 1982, when "Little Red Corvette" ruled the airwaves, Braniff Airways shocked the travel industry and threw passengers into chaos by declaring bankruptcy. When did you last fly? Did your trip go smoothly?
My last flight was 3 years ago, and went very smoothly.

7) 1982 is also the year Disney opened Epcot. Have you ever been to a Disney park?
I have been to Disneyland once and Disney World three times.

8) 1982 is the year Cheers premiered. The sitcom was set in a bar where "everybody knows your name." Tell us about your favorite local bar or restaurant.
Don't really have one.

9) The 1980s were considered a highpoint in professional tennis, with Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe dominating the sport. Do you play tennis?
Took tennis lessons one summer, but never really got into it.
